This department is your hub for garage and workshop equipment in the UK — car ramps, engine stands, hydraulic jacks, shop presses and motorcycle stands. For car and van work, start with ramps and axle stands, then engine stands and cranes for powertrain jobs. For bike work, paddock stands and wheel chocks hold the motorcycle for chain, tyre and storage jobs.
This is the principle behind everything on this page, and it is where people get hurt. A jack, a crane or a hydraulic ramp lifts — it moves the load. A stand, an axle stand or a chock supports — it holds the load once it is up. Lifting equipment is not designed to hold weight indefinitely, and hydraulics can creep. Never put any part of yourself under a vehicle or an engine that is held only by the thing that lifted it.
Read it per item, not per set. For a bike, take the wet weight from the owner's manual and add a 25% margin. For car ramps, only two wheels go up, so what matters is the rating per ramp against the axle load — a “4 ton set” means 2 ton each. For engine stands, weigh the engine and not the car: a four-cylinder petrol is roughly 120–150kg bare, an iron-block V8 250kg or more, and add 60–90kg if the gearbox is still attached.
If you are equipping from scratch, the order that gets you working soonest is: a way to get the vehicle up safely, then a way to hold it, then the tools for the job itself. For a bike that means a rear paddock stand before anything else. For a car it means ramps, and axle stands alongside them. Presses, porta power kits and engine cranes are job-specific — buy them when the job arrives, or hire for a one-off.

Ramps lift the car but are not a substitute for axle stands. Chock the wheels still on the ground, apply the handbrake, leave the car in gear or Park, and place axle stands under the chassis before going underneath. Use them only on level, solid concrete.
For car ramps, check the rating per ramp against axle load — our hydraulic sets are rated 2 ton per ramp (4 ton per pair). For engine stands, weigh the engine: a four-cylinder petrol is roughly 120–150kg bare, an iron-block V8 250kg or more. For bikes, take wet weight plus a 25% margin on paddock stands and chocks.
Yes, unless lifting is already sorted. A stand holds the engine once it is out of the car — it cannot lift it from the bay. The crane does the removal, the stand does the rebuild.
A paddock stand lifts one wheel off the ground for jobs like chain adjustment or wheel removal. A wheel chock grips the front wheel to hold the bike upright without lifting it, which suits parking, cleaning and transport tie-downs. Plenty of riders run a chock at the front and a paddock stand at the rear for full stability.
Only for bobbin-type L-hook stands, which lift on 8mm or 10mm bobbins screwed into the swingarm. If your swingarm has no threaded holes, choose a fork or cup-adapter stand instead. We sell M8 bobbin adapters separately if you need them.
A self-locking chock holds the bike upright, but for transport you must also use ratchet tie-down straps to at least four anchor points, compressing the front suspension slightly. Bolt or strap the chock itself to the van or trailer bed first.
