Choosing motorcycle accessories

Top boxes: start with what you actually carry

Capacity is quoted in litres and the number that matters is whether a helmet fits. Around 30 litres takes a full face helmet and not much else — fine for a commute. 45 litres takes a helmet plus a jacket, gloves and shopping, which is why it is the most common size sold. Above 50 litres you are into touring territory, and the extra weight sits high and behind the rear axle where it affects handling most.

You will probably need a rack as well as the box

A top box mounts to a base plate, and that base plate needs something to bolt to — either an existing luggage rack or a bike-specific carrier. Universal boxes ship with a universal plate, which fits most racks but not every bike directly. Check what your bike already has before you order, because a box with nowhere to mount is the most common return in this category.

Security: the rating is what your insurer looks at

A ground anchor is only as good as what it is fixed to and what you loop through it. Bolt-down anchors need solid concrete and security bolts that cannot be undone from outside; a chain through an anchor and the frame is far harder to defeat than a disc lock alone. If your insurer specifies approved security, check the wording carefully — many require a Sold Secure rated lock, chain or anchor at a stated level, and fitting an unrated one may not satisfy the policy.

Covers: waterproof is not the whole story

A fully waterproof cover keeps rain off and can also trap moisture underneath, which is worse for a bike stored outdoors over winter than being rained on. Look for vents, and let the bike cool and dry before covering it. Fit matters too: a cover that flaps in wind will scuff paint over a season, and one that is too small leaves the bottom of the bike exposed. Measure your bike rather than guessing from the size letter.

LED indicators: expect the hyper-flash

Swap filament bulbs for LEDs and the indicators usually start flashing at double speed. Nothing is broken — LEDs draw far less current, and the original flasher relay reads that as a blown bulb. The fix is a 2-pin LED flasher relay or a load resistor. Worth ordering at the same time as the indicators rather than discovering it on the drive.

Grips and bars: 22mm is the standard

Most motorcycle handlebars are 22mm (7/8 inch) at the grip, which is why universal grips fit the great majority of bikes. Check the throttle side — the right grip has a larger internal diameter because it sits on the throttle tube, so grips are sold in pairs for a reason.

Accessory questions

What size top box do I need? +

Around 30 litres takes a full face helmet and little else, which suits a commute. 45 litres takes a helmet plus jacket, gloves and shopping — the most useful size for most riders. Above 50 litres the weight sits high and behind the rear axle, where it affects handling most.

Do I need a rack to fit a top box? +

The box mounts to a base plate, and that plate needs an existing luggage rack or a bike-specific carrier to bolt to. Universal boxes ship with a universal plate that fits most racks but not every bike directly. Check what your bike already has before ordering.

Why do my LED indicators flash twice as fast? +

Nothing is broken. LEDs draw far less current than filament bulbs, and the original flasher relay reads that as a blown bulb. Fit a 2-pin LED flasher relay or a load resistor and the flash rate returns to normal.

Will a ground anchor satisfy my insurance? +

Check your policy wording. Many insurers specify a Sold Secure rated lock, chain or anchor at a stated level, and an unrated product may not meet the requirement even if it is physically strong. The anchor also needs fixing into solid concrete with security bolts to be worth having.

Will universal grips fit my bike? +

Almost certainly. Most motorcycle handlebars are 22mm (7/8 inch) at the grip. Grips are sold in pairs because the throttle side has a larger internal diameter to sit over the throttle tube.

Should I cover my bike if it lives outside? +

Yes, but let it cool and dry first. A fully sealed cover over a wet or warm bike traps moisture, which does more harm over a winter than rain would. Look for vents, and measure your bike rather than guessing from the size letter — a cover that flaps will scuff paint over a season.

Do you deliver free to the UK? +

Yes. Every order ships free to any UK mainland address — no minimum spend. Most in-stock items dispatch within 1–3 working days, and free 30-day returns are included on all orders.
